At the Smilow Woodland TGR Learning Lab, volunteers play a vital role in creating meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for students. Every day, students walk through our doors ready to explore new ideas, build skills and discover what’s possible for their future, and volunteers help make those moments happen.
April is National Volunteer Month, but at the Lab, there are opportunities to get involved all year long.
While the passion for giving back is often a motivation for getting involved, the joy of learning is contagious and keep volunteers like Lee Johnson Jr. coming back.
“I was born and raised in this area, and after learning more about the mission and being part of it, watching the joy of these kids succeed can be contagious,” he said. “If more people volunteered here, they’d find that this joy is just an added plus to the work we do.”

Mr. Lee and fellow volunteers gather for a photo during a Volunteer Appreciation Celebration at the TGR Learning Lab.
