Every junior at my school looks forward to January. This year, it wasn’t because the Eagles were Super Bowl–bound, but because we were preparing to trade classrooms, tests and homework for office chairs and boardrooms through our internships. When the deadline arrived to submit our work site choices, my decision felt easy. I wanted something close to home and rooted in community where I could give back. That place was the TGR Learning Lab.

I never would have imagined the experience I’d have on my first day.
I was warmly welcomed by the staff and invited to join the team’s Monday meeting. It felt less like a meeting and more like a family reunion. The passion in the room made me forget it was a Monday morning. I introduced myself and, more importantly, set goals for my month at the Lab.
After the meeting, my direct supervisor, Josh, immediately took me under his wing. I helped him reach out to families to confirm student attendance, and hearing their voices filled with gratitude, excitement and trust made it clear just how meaningful the Lab is to students and parents alike.
The day continued with classroom prep for upcoming workshops, behind-the-scenes support, and finally connecting with students as they arrived. I even sat in on a class to better understand what teaching at the TGR Learning Lab looks like in action. By the end of the day, my expectations hadn’t just been met, they had been completely surpassed.
And then, unexpectedly, I met Tiger Woods.
It was a moment I’ll never forget, and one that’s hard to top! What made it even more special was how naturally it fit into the environment, an extraordinary moment in a place where extraordinary things happen every day. Not many interns can say they received golf stroke coaching from a legend on day one.

As the weeks went on, I got to know the team at the TGR Learning Lab more deeply. They are some of the most dedicated and passionate people I’ve ever met. From the moment I walk in, I’m greeted with genuine warmth from the front desk staff, a small thing that sets the tone for the entire day. The educators don’t just teach; they build real relationships with students and support them academically, socially and personally.
The teachers clearly love what they do. Their lessons are thoughtfully planned, engaging and taught with care. They don’t just aim to educate, they aim to empower.
Throughout my internship, I’ve learned so much, not only about education but about teamwork, communication and leadership. Whenever I ran into a challenge, I never felt hesitant to ask for help. The team consistently supported me, offering guidance in a way that helped me grow and solve problems independently.
Growing up in the Overbrook Park neighborhood, after-school programs were a constant in my life. They gave me structure, support and access to educators who genuinely cared about my growth. Because of those experiences, I’ve always felt a strong desire to give back — to be that person for younger students who might need guidance, encouragement or simply someone in their corner.
My time at the TGR Learning Lab has reinforced my desire to continue working with young people and giving back to the community that helped raise me. I’ve experienced opportunities I never imagined, learned invaluable lessons and been part of a space that truly lives its mission.
I’ve had an incredible time interning at the TGR Learning Lab, and I would wholeheartedly recommend the experience to any high school student looking to make an impact, grow personally and be part of a welcoming, purpose-driven community.
