Ahead of the 108th PGA Championship, members of the TGR Learning Lab Philadelphia participated in a Career Exploration Day at Aronimink Golf Club.

Students were welcomed to the Club and participated in a series of interactive sessions led by industry professionals who shared insights into their career journeys and experiences within the golf industry. The day showcased golf as more than a sport, offering students a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to bring a large-scale event to life.

Sessions highlighted the design, engineering and software tools used by brands like TaylorMade, gave students hands-on exposure to CAD instruments and included tours of the media center to explore the technology behind major championship coverage. Other discussions focused on golf course and campus management, tournament operations, merchandising and more.

“The best part of this experience was getting to see the golf course and hearing other people’s experiences of how they got into golf,” said Darby, a high school TGR Learning Lab member. “It showed me that there are still opportunities to help people within the golf industry.”

Connecting with Industry Professionals

Students also engaged directly with industry professionals, gaining insight into the collaboration and coordination required to host a historic championship. During a networking lunch, conversations encouraged students to think beyond what they once believed was possible. By the end of the experience, students left inspired, seeing how their diverse interests can connect through one sport.

“These events are incredibly important for the golf industry to introduce young golfers and those interested in pursuing a career in the golf industry to what goes into it, what opportunities are available and everything that comes with working in golf,” said Matt Hiner, Career Services, PGA of America. “It’s a great opportunity to partner with local organizations, students and families to provide exposure to career opportunities within the industry.”

Exploring golf media careers

Students also explored media and broadcasting roles of professional golf. Several members joined Brian Katrek for a live episode of SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, where they shared their experiences at the Lab and gained behind-the-scenes insight into what it takes to host a national radio show.

Students observed the communication, production and storytelling involved in live sports broadcasting while gaining insight into careers in sports media. Many also used their public speaking skills for live advertising commercials.
